“I explore notions of placement and fixed boundaries to reveal the precariousness of belonging. As a currently undocumented person with DACA in the US, my work seeks to reclaim agency over the experience, aesthetic and futurity of undocumentedness. I create semi-abstract paintings where the deconstruction and re-framing of the fence, a symbol for borders in all its forms, allows for an ecosystem of possibility and transformation to emerge. The borderland, or the fence-scape (fence+landscape), where the border is situated, whether physical, psychological or imagined, can become a site for play, joy and passage. Through an intuitive process of layering paint and other media, I explore the potential of abstraction to make meaning and logic. Through spatial illusions, color, pattern and form I build spaces that feel both familiar and speculative. I aim for the paintings to exude a sense of optimism, playfulness and intrigue, which is how I define my process.” - Francisco Donoso
