Exhibiting a new body of work, Alex Nuñez, paints sumptuous and decadent, defiantly glamorous and gritty works - reminiscent of a South Beach nightclub floor. Working in her Little Haiti studio, Nuñez builds up her canvases on the floor, pouring iridescent acrylic paint, scrawling chalk pastel and oil stick, drizzling glitter, also meticulously placing crystals amidst flakes of gold leaf to create hazy glimmering layers.

The monumental scale of the works feature Nuñez’ iconic emerging landscapes that chronicle mutant mangroves and phosphorescent vegetation. Palm trees with jagged teeth and outstretched tongues strangle other plants to grab their place in the sun. Amidst the toxic beauty, a hopeful message emerges: new forms morph and evolve, a testament to their ongoing adaptation and resilience.

Within the exhibition, Nuñez will feature fifteen birch wood panels. These colorful works hold a deeper meaning. Many Cuban exiles have first-hand accounts of burying family valuables and priceless keepsakes that could not be taken on their voyage to the United States. These precious items were buried in the hopes of returning home to recover them. This series of paintings mentally unearth these buried ancestral treasures. Rainbows are used throughout as symbols of hope and what is to come.
